The BJP in Maharashtra has long supported statehood for the Vidarbha region, but has stopped short of making it an election issue because its former alliance partner Shiv Sena had a different view. Ironically, now even though the BJP and the Sena have parted ways, the fear of a backlash across the state is preventing the BJP from making its stand clear on the issue of a separate Vidarbha state.
