Lena Dunham Discusses Hysterectomy, Battle With Endometriosis The former "Girls" star made the reveal in an essay in the March issue of Vogue. According to the National Institutes of Health endometriosis is "a condition in which the tissue that normally lines the uterus grows outside the uterus." Symptoms can include pelvic pain, heavy bleeding during periods and fertility issues. Dunham's decision to have the surgery only came after “years of complex surgeries" and alternative treatments including “pelvic floor therapy, massage therapy, pain therapy, color therapy, acupuncture” and yoga.
