এশিয়ার দ্বীপ রাষ্ট্র শ্রীলঙ্কায় রেকর্ড সংখ্যক নারী প্রার্থী নিয়ে স্থানীয় সরকার নির্বাচন অনুষ্ঠিত হয়েছে। নির্বাচনে ১৭ হাজার নারী প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বিতা করেন বলে জানিয়েছে দেশটির নির্বাচন কমিশন। সম্প্রতি একটি আইনে সংশোধন আনায় দেশটিতে নারী-পুরুষের সমঅধিকার নিশ্চিত হয়েছে বলে জানায় পর্যবেক্ষক সংস্থাগুলো।
সম্প্রতি শ্রীলঙ্কায় এক চতুর্থাংশ নারী প্রতিনিধি দিয়ে স্থানীয় সরকার নির্বাচনে প্রার্থী চূড়ান্ত করার বিধান রেখে আইনে সংশোধনী আনা হয়। এর ফলে আগের চেয়ে ১২ শতাংশ বেশি নারী নির্বাচিত হবেন।
স্থানীয় সরকার পরিষদের ৩৪০টি আসনে ভোট হয়েছে শনিবার। ৮ হাজার ৩শ আসনের বিপরীতে লড়েছেন ১৭ হাজার নারী প্রার্থী। নির্বাচনে কলম্বোর মেয়র পদে লড়ছেন কূটনীতিক ও সংসদ সদস্য রোজি সেনানায়েকে। এ পদে তিনিই প্রথম নারী প্রার্থী।
তিনি বলেন, 'আমি দৃঢ়ভাবে বিশ্বাস করি যে আমরা যদি সংখ্যাগরিষ্ঠ জনসংখ্যার চাহিদার দিকে দৃষ্টি না দেই তবে গণতন্ত্র টিকিয়ে রাখা সম্ভব নয়। ভুলে গেলে চলবে না এদেশে জনসংখ্যার সংখ্যাগরিষ্ঠই নারী।'
