This is kind of a spinoff of my how to paint your guitar . I understand that many people do not have the equipment to paint the way that I do in my other videos, so this one is for people who want to use spray cans to paint a guitar.\r
\r
Disclaimer: Aerosol paint really isnt the best option for a quality finish. If you have an expensive guitar that you want to refinish I recommend that you take the time, or make the investment, to do something better than a rattle can finish.\r
\r
The process:\r
\r
In order to paint your guitar you need to begin by preparing it so that the paint will adhere correctly. You do this by sanding it first. The grit to which you need to sand it depends on what you are planning on beginning with for paint, but I generally like to sand it quite smooth. I use 400 grit as a final sanding for bare wood, and 600 grit for finishes.\r
\r
Next, if you have bare wood you may need to grain fill in order to get it smooth enough to accept paint properly. This is particularly important with open grained woods.\r
After the wood is smooth enough to begin painting, it is time to seal it. Apply a sealer or primer to seal the wood so that you can start applying your colour.\r
\r
Next you can put your paint job on the guitar, with all the colours etc. that you are looking for.\r
\r
Finally, you need to apply a clear coat to protect the paint job and give it the proper gloss. Clear coat can go on a little heavier than your colours, particularly if the guitar is positioned horizontally so that there is little chance of the paint running.\r
\r
Once the clear has dried or cured sufficiently, you can sand and polish it to smooth out imperfections and give it a proper mirror finish. Keep in mind that different kinds of paint require different amounts of time to harden enough that they are ready for polishing.\r
