Gunmen stormed an office of Save the Children in eastern Afghanistan on Wednesday, killing at least five people and injuring 26.
Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, which began with a suicide car bomb outside the Jalalabad office and set off a shootout with police that lasted almost ten hours.
Up to 46 people took refuge in a fortified "safe room" in the compound and were rescued by late afternoon.
Save the Children denounced the attack, which killed three of their staff members.

"Save the Children condemns this attack. Aid workers should never, never be a target."

The NGO, which has operated in Afghanistan since 1976, said it has closed its offices and suspended its operations temporarily, but remains committed to helping the children there.

"We have suspended for a while our operations in Afghanistan, but we rest deeply committed to helping the children in Afghanistan. … Save the Children has been there for more than 40 years and we will stay in Afghanistan to help all these children."

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said he was "appalled and deeply saddened" by the casualties and reiterated that aid workers should never be targeted.
