Abdulhamid the Second was the 113th Caliph of Islam and the 34th Sultan of Turkey. He is renowned for establishing an Islamic league under the title Caliphate and for his investments in the Muslim lands. He had resisted the secularization of the Empire until he was deposed by a coup conducted by the Western-oriented Young Turks in 1908, a group that later brought the Empire to its knees.
