Gathering of “vory v zakone” — the Russian mafia — raided, 59 arrested | воров в законе | Russia

Inside a restaurant in Dzerzhinsky, a suburb of Moscow, police raided a gathering of criminal leaders — members of the vory v zakone or “thieves in law,” the Russian mafia. A total of 59 people were arrested. The attendees came well armed — officers seized 15 handguns, five rifles, a shotgun and 15 knives. The weapons were sent for forensic examination to see if any of them are linked to previous crimes. Police say the meeting featured representatives from several district south-east of the Russian capital, including Lyubertsy, Voskresensky and Kolomna. Russian police often refer to the vors as “criminal authorities.” The raid was announced Feb. 17, 2016. Those arrested were bewteen the ages of 20 and 47. Many had previous criminal convictions. The “vors” (vory v zakone or vor v zakone) are the pre-eminent criminal organization in Russia’s underworld — similar to being a “made man” in the Italian Mafia.
