New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and her partner, TV fishing show presenter Clarke Gayford, addressed reporters outside their Auckland home on January 19 after announcing on social media that Ardern was pregnant.Ardern said she would take six weeks off after the baby was born, in June, while Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters serves in her place. She said she would resume all prime ministerial duties at the end of her leave. She discovered she was pregnant back on October 13 – six days before she learned she would become prime minister following negotiations with Peters. “As many couples do in the early stages, we kept it to ourselves,” she said.Ardern, 37, had previously talked about wanting to start a family. A controversy erupted in August, after she succeeded Andrew Little as leader of the Labour Party and members of the media asked her about plans to have children.
