A long time ago, I wrote a poem called Earth Is Heaven To The Stars. Usually, I have a very distinct sense when I’m writing, what ought to be a poem and what ought to by lyrics. I had no doubt at the time that it oughtn’t to be a song. However, for some reason, I got it in my head yesterday to resurrect the poem in a different form. I doubled the verses and added a chorus, and here it is - for better or worse.
I feel like the lyrics are painfully self-explanatory. It’s all about perspective and never letting knowledge kill your wonder. Understanding ought to increase our awe, not stifle it.
I originally wrote this in a different key, but the specific ways I wanted to open up the chords lent itself better in D. The weirdest chord by far is the F#m variant, but my favorite is probably the D. I love to do this obnoxious thing where I play the 1,2,3,4, and 5 of a chord, which sounds like it would be a terrible idea, but I really love the color that comes out. In this case, the 2nd is de-emphasised in the picking, so it mostly sounds like a Dadd4.
Lyrics: earth is heaven to the stars a shame we don’t Agree our perspective, worlds apart the distance helps them see
we look to them to see our fate i wonder if they look to us we look to them to find our way we see magic in their dust
all that we know, we call Science all that we don’t is mystery i find i’m somewhat noncompliant because beauty and truth is all the same to me
we see this world beneath our feet or see it not at all but if we looked from underneath we’d understand the Thrall
too close to truly understand too careless to feel awe we walk in a celestial land and look up at the stars
all that we know, we call science all that we don’t is mystery i find i’m somewhat noncompliant because beauty and truth is all the same to me
earth is heaven to the stars why can we never see the beauty that’s already ours the magic of Reality
if we’re born from dust of stars, our heaven is right here we’re astronauts of circumstance we breathe in heaven’s Atmosphere
all that we know, we call science all that we don’t is mystery i find i’m somewhat noncompLiant because beauty and truth is all the same to me yes, beauty and truth is all the same to me
