When Carl Cox's parents emigrated to Britain from Barbados mid-way through the 1950s, they had no idea their son would turn into one of the biggest DJs the world has ever seen.
But in 1984, when his family returned to Barbados, young Carl - a scruffy scaffolder with a distinct lack of cash money - was left high and dry. "I had to grow up quickly," remembers Carl. "If I'd gone back, I'd have been one of the people that greet you playing steel drums," he laughs. Pete Tong agrees. "Carl is one of the most naturally gifted mixers I have come across," he says with a tiny hint of envy. "I actually think he should have been a drummer!" Of course, drums still play a big part in Carl's life, as his sublime Mixmag CD debut, first released on the cover of Mixmag way back in in 2004, demonstrates. Staying on in England, Carl forged a career as a drag racer and mobile disc jockey, discovering a love of speed, soul and rare groove. But somewhere along the (motor)way, the drums got harder and faster and - while he's never lost his soul or, indeed, his hardcore - a pure passion for techno was forged. And it's been in his blood ever since. But enough excited rambling. Kick back, slip this mix into your stereo and let the drums speak. You won't be disappointed...
