Protecting the Clean Athlete, Protecting Health
Dr Richard Budgett shares the vision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which is to change the world for the better through sport and to promote social change. Protecting the health of the athlete is an important part of this vision, in order to protect the integrity of sport, protect elite athletes, protect the health of all those exercising and to promote physical activity.
The protection of clean athletes through doping control is also important for the protection of the integrity of sport and of athlete health. The focus of the IOC Medical Commission is the prevention of injury and illness; this is done through world conferences, injury and illness surveillance, International Federations (IF) and National Olympic Committees.
Speaker Biography
Dr Richard Budgett (OBE, MA, MBBS, FRCP, FFSEM, FISM Dip Sports Med), International Olympic Committee Medical and Scientific Director has been in his current role since November 2012. Before that he was Chief Medical Officer for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games from 2007 to 2012. He was Director of Medical Services for the British Olympic Association from 1994 to 2007 and has been Chief Medical Officer with Team GB at 6 summer and winter Olympic Games. Since 1987 he has conducted research into the problem of fatigue and underperformance and has published widely on the subject of Overtraining or Unexplained Underperformance Syndrome (UUPS). In 2005, Dr Budgett was appointed to the World Anti-Doping Agency list committee, which he chaired from 2010 to 2012. He was Chairman of the British Rowing Medical Committee for 20 years and won an Olympic Gold Medal in rowing in Los Angeles in 1984.

The Sports Science & Medicine Conference was held for the first time at the SAS UK & Ireland company headquarters in Marlow. The conference had delegates attend from a variety of Sports Science and Medical disciplines, who travelled from within the UK and around the world – all attracted by an exciting programme which boasts an impressive list of speakers from the leading edge of research and practice. The event was supported by UK Sport and FISA and proved to be a great success.
