Greek anti-austerity protesters storm Labor Ministry

In the evening of 9 January, a massive and combative demonstration was organized in Athens by the Greek Communist-affiliated group PAME.
The trade-unions began rallying in Omonia Square, in protest of new austerity multi-bill and restriction of the right to strike, that the SYRIZA-ANEL government is about to present in the Parliament. Moreover, this bill will extend the property auctions against those that have debts to the State and will further cut the remaining social benefits.
When the march reached the Ministry of Labor, the representatives of the workers demanded the doors of the Ministry to open so that they could meet with the political leadership. Since their demands were left unanswered, they opened the doors by themselves, damaging the metal shutters at the main gate and smashing some windows at the ministry's entrance. They shouted slogans such as “The law is the just cause of the worker and not the profits of the capitalist”. Some of the protesters put up a banner at the entrance , thus "renaming" the Ministry of Labour into: “Ministry of IMF-EU-Bosses”.
The protesters made it to the eighth floor of the building, where some representatives entered the office of Labour Minister Effie Achtsioglou and demanded withdrawal of the proposed law.
The representatives of the workers stressed that it is a shame to abolish the right of strike, a right for which generations of workers have shed their blood.
The minister chose to respond to the demand of the representatives of the workers to retract the part of the bill relevant with the strike with a dry “no” and to leave the office.
The demonstrators remained for a long time outside the ministry, while a group of them unfurled a huge banner that read: "Government-big capital-EU listen well: Hands off the right of strike. It’s a worker’s right”, hanging it from the roof of the ministry on a busy street in central Athens.
Athens, Greece, 9 January 2018.
