Former Taliban Hostage Faces Assault Charges Joshua Boyle was just arrested in Ottawa and is now facing 15 charges. Boyle and his family spent five years in militant captivity in Afghanistan. According to Canadian media reports, The couple were kidnapped by a Taliban-linked group in 2012. They were taken hostage in Afghanistan while on a backpacking trip through Central and South Asia. They were freed by a Pakistani mission based on U.S. intelligence.
