President Trump on Tuesday asserted that sanctions and "other" pressures on North Korea are having an impact.
President Trump on Tuesday said that the measures taken against North Korea in recent times are bringing results.
"Sanctions and 'other' pressures are beginning to have a big impact on North Korea," Trump wrote in a tweet. "Soldiers are dangerously fleeing to South Korea. Rocket man now wants to talk to South Korea for first time. Perhaps that is good news, perhaps not - we will see!"
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un suggested in a New Year speech that his nation will hold talks with South Korea regarding sending athletes to the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
Kim described participation as "a good opportunity to show unity of the people," reports NBC News.
South Korea's leader Moon Jae-in has expressed similar sentiments, saying that North Korea's involvement in the games could help bring peace to the peninsula.
The last talks between the two nations were reportedly held in 2015.
Kim's willingness to meet with South Korea may or may not indicate he is bending to sanctions-related pressures, but the latest limitations drafted by the U.S. and accepted by the UN Security Council include deep cuts to North Korea's energy supplies.
CNN notes that Kim has declared the tightened restrictions an "act of war."
