The First Supermoon of the Year Will Be on New Year's Day According to NASA, a supermoon appears bigger and brighter in the sky than a normal full moon. NASA says the phenomenon happens when a full moon occurs around the moon is at its closest point to the Earth while in orbit. It is the second supermoon in the last month, with the last one occurring on Dec. 3. There will only be one more supermoon in 2018, which can be seen on Jan. 31. It will also be a total lunar eclipse. The lunar eclipse on January 31 will be visible during moonset. Folks in the Eastern United States, where the eclipse will be partial, will have to get up in the morning to see it.
