McConnell Calls Out Bannon’s ‘Political Genius’ After Moore’s Defeat

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Friday took a jab at former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon over Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore's defeat in Alabama earlier this month.
When asked at a press conference if he blamed Bannon for Democrat Doug Jones' victory, McConnell said, "The political genius on display throwing away a seat in the reddest state in America is hard to ignore."
Bannon had backed Moore in a campaign dominated by accusations of sexual misconduct against the candidate.
McConnell, on the other hand, was critical of Moore, saying in November that he should "step aside" and then in early December, "let the people of Alabama make the call."
In the end, Jones emerged as the winner and as the Los Angeles Times noted, "He's the first Democrat elected to the Senate from Alabama in a quarter-century."
