Instagram 'Direct' Will Be Standalone Messaging App First there was WhatsApp, then Messenger, and now 'Direct.' The standalone app will be solely dedicated to Instagram direct messages. Kevin Weil, Instagram Vice President The app will open to the camera, just like Snapchat, according to The Verge. When Facebook, who owns Instagram, created Messenger it grew to now boast 1.3 billion monthly users.
