Rescuers Work Frantically to Free Horses From Burning Barn in Bonsall

Rescuers worked tirelessly to free horses from the burning barns at the San Luis Rey Training Center on December 7. The Bonsall, California, center was in the path of the Lilac Fire, which grew from 50 acres to more than 4,000 in a matter of hours.This video shows dozens of horses being freed, running wildly. Rescuers tried to coax many other horses from the barns. Flames could be seen burning the property in the background, as people wore masks to protect themselves from thick smoke.Trainer Cliff Sise told Fox 5 San Diego that he estimated a dozen horses were killed in the fire, and many others injured, but he could not give a specific number. He said he tried to rescue his own horse from a barn, but the fire spread too quickly and his horse died.The Lilac Fire, like the other wildfires burning in Southern California, was fueled on Thursday by Santa Ana winds. Wind gusts were forecasted to top 80 mph. The San Diego Union-Tribune reported the Lilac Fire destroyed dozens of structures and was threatening 5,000 more.California Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency in San Diego County due to the growing fire.
