President Trump has described his trip to Asia in glowing terms, but a North Korean state newspaper has expressed a very different view.
According to The Guardian, an editorial in Rodong Sinmun states that the U.S. president is, "a hideous criminal sentenced to death by the Korean people."
The reason cited was Trump's unflattering words about North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
"The worst crime for which he can never be pardoned is that he dared [to] malignantly hurt the dignity of the supreme leadership," the editorial noted. "He will be forced to pay dearly for his blasphemy any moment." Trump did make a number of forceful statements about both Kim Jong-un and the nation in last week's address to South Korea's National Assembly.
He called North Korea, "a hell that no person deserves," and warned, "The weapons you are acquiring are not making you safer. They are putting your regime in grave danger. Every step you take down this dark path increases the peril you face."
"Do not underestimate us, and do not try us. We will defend our common security, our shared prosperity, and our sacred liberty," Trump also said.
Days later, Trump tweeted, "Why would Kim Jong-un insult me by calling me 'old,' when I would NEVER call him 'short and fat?'"
