Cliven Bundy Conspiracy Trial Opening Statements Set To Begin

On Tuesday, federal prosecutors and defense lawyers were due to face off in the trial of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy for his part in a 2014 armed standoff that spurred militia groups challenging the government's authority in the American West. On Monday, U.S. District Judge Gloria Navarro rejected a last minute defense bid to have the case dismissed, paving the way for both sides to deliver opening statements in a trial expected to stretch into February. Bundy, as well as three co-defendants, are accused of conspiring to use threats of force in order to prevent a court-ordered impoundment of Bundy’s cattle, which the government said had trespassed on federal land.
