Don't like sharks? The American Alligator has you covered
  • 6 years ago
FLORIDA/GEORGIA — Research published in the journal Southeastern Naturalist details findings of American alligators eating sharks around the coasts of Georgia and Florida.

Alligator's diets typically consist of shellfish, fish and larger mammals as they grow older. The research pumped the stomach of 500 alligators and found small sharks and stingrays to be present in some.

Alligators mainly hunt in freshwater environments, but can sip rain during storms from the water surface to prolong their time in saltwater environments.

The research also considered cases of larger sharks eating smaller alligators and old reports of mass battles between the predators during floods.
