President Trump has marked the one-year anniversary of his 2016 election victory by tweeting about the so-called "deplorables" who voted for him.
"Congratulations to all of the 'DEPLORABLES' and the millions of people who gave us a MASSIVE (304-227) Electoral College landslide victory!" he wrote.
His message refers to a critical remark Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton had made during a campaign event in September 2016.
"You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump's supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic — you name it," Clinton said at the time. "And unfortunately there are people like that. And he has lifted them up."
According to an assessment by RealClearPolitics, her use of the word was one of the contributing factors to her loss even though she later tried to clarify her comment.
Trump has joked about the term since becoming president.
"That's been a very lucky word for me and many millions of people," he noted a few months ago.
