Airlines are doing all sorts of things to get more seats filled

U.S.A — The airline interior industry is worth $17 billion and growing, while airline seats are shrinking.

Over time, the average width of airline seating on U.S. flights has gradually shrunk, despite the weight of the average American going up, reported the New York Times.

Airlines have also decreased pitch, the legroom and space between seating rows, in a bid to accommodate more passengers on flights. Some seating manufacturers have also reduced the thickness of seats.

The airline interiors industry is said to be worth $17 billion dollars, and is expected to grow in the coming decade, reported the Economist, citing the Los Angeles Times.
