Australia’s aboriginals are finally victorious. Australia is banning visitors from scaling their sacred Uluru, one of the country’s top tourist attractions. The 1,141-foot-tall rock will be officially closed in 2019 — 34 years to the day since Australia returned ownership of Uluru to the indigenous Anangu people.
Most locals don’t climb Uluru out of respect for the Anangu. But many of the 250,000 annual visitors overlook the religious significance, and ignore aboriginal objections. Now, what has become a symbol for indigenous rights, will be officially closed, and respected as a sacred site for the country’s original inhabitants.
