Amazon Buys Cryptocurrency Domains

Investing.com - Amazon has secured the rights to use three cryptocurrency related domains, a move that could signal its intentions to enter the cryptocurrency space. The three domains in question are Amazonethereum.com, Amazoncryptocurrency.com, and Amazoncryptocurrencies.com.According to trade publication DomainNameWire, Amazon registered the three domains on Tuesday. This isn't Amazon's first cryptocurrency related domain, as the company purchased Amazonbitcoin.com over three years ago. However, the web address just redirects to Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN), at least for now. Clement Thibault, senior analyst at Investing.com, said in a note that the move didn't come as a surprise. "It's not surprising to see companies protecting their brand names. Amazon already had a cryptocurrency related domain, and it makes sense that they would cover their bases on this front. Amazon isn't expected to allow Bitcoin payments in the near future."Indeed, so far Amazon hasn't shown a willingness to accept cryptocurrencies as payment. Amazon Pay's VP Patrick Gauthier told CNBC last month that there hasn't been a lot of demand for the popular e-commerce website to accept cryptocurrencies. However, if Amazon's implementation of cryptocurrency payments is just a factor of demand, there's a good chance we'll see the technology implemented in the future.
