Senator Rand Paul expressed a lack of certainty during an MSNBC interview Sunday after he was asked about the benefits of a Republican presidential primary in 2020.
"I think no one can stop primaries from happening, and there could well be a primary that happens," Paul responded. "Before you even get to that, you need to know, is President Trump running for re-election? I think you won't know that until you get into sort of second, third year of his presidency."
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie made some similar comments on the "Today" show Friday, telling Matt Lauer about Trump, "If he runs again, I would support him, yes. But I'm not so sure what will happen."
"Four years is a long time, and especially for someone who has not spent a lifetime in politics, so I think those years affect him differently," Christie continued. "I'm sure the president will make whatever decision is best for him and his family and the country."
Despite the seeming uncertainty, Trump filed with the Federal Election Commission to run for re-election on the same day he was sworn into office.
Also, records show that Trump has already raised more than $25 million towards that effort.
However, the president has been dogged by controversies including the Russia investigation, his interactions with Gold Star families, and infighting within his own party--the latter two of which were cited in a recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll showing that his job approval number has dropped to a new low of 38 percent.
