Former FBI Director James Comey is attracting attention for posting a mysterious quote to his Twitter account the same day special counsel Robert Mueller's first indictments were handed out.
"Man's capacity for justice makes democracy possible, but man's inclination to injustice makes democracy necessary," Comey tweeted one of Reinhold Niebuhr's quotes.
It was only Comey's ninth tweet under the recently discovered account with the 20th century theologian as its username.
While the ex-federal official did not provide an explanation or further context for his latest post, a 2005 New York Times book review about Niebuhr described the quote as a way he "summed up his political argument in a single powerful sentence."
"Niebuhr emphasized the mixed and ambivalent character of human nature -- creative impulses matched by destructive impulses, regard for others overruled by excessive self-regard, the will to power, the individual under constant temptation to play God to history," the publication also noted.
There is speculation that Comey may have been indirectly commenting on the Monday indictment of former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort and business associate Rick Gates who are accused of improper financial dealings.
