A photo posted to a previously secret Twitter account belonging to former FBI Director James Comey has prompted speculation about a potential bid for president.
The image, posted Monday, shows a casually dressed man resembling Comey standing in the middle of an empty two-lane road. The accompanying message reads, “Goodbye Iowa. On the road home. Gotta get back to writing. Will try to tweet in useful ways.”
The account has since been attributed to Comey by longtime friend Benjamin Wittes who tweeted in response to the Iowa post, “'Ok, in light of this latest tweet, I will confirm that @FormerBu is, in fact, James Comey himself.”
The handle is believed to refer to a shortened nickname for the Bureau while the username, Reinhold Niebuhr, reportedly refers to a theologian Comey once wrote about in college.
In response to his presence in Iowa, a key state for presidential primaries, and his footwear choice of running shoes, the media and other online users began suggesting that he may be preparing to run for president.
However, the Des Moines Register reported Monday that Comey was likely in the state to attend the 90th birthday celebration of his father-in-law.
Comey has not yet responded publicly about any of the speculation, and it is thus far unknown what his next professional move will be after being fired from the FBI by President Trump.
