Why Some Alcohol Gives You a Hangover / Congeners / The More You Know

You ever wonder why certain alcohol gives you a nasty hangover? The headache is powerful, potent and lasts for hours. But, last time you were fine. What goes into creating that hangover when drinking alcohol and what can you do about avoiding them?\r

Did you know you can get a hangover from too much sugar as well? Did you also know a lot of cheaper alcohol utilizes sugar to round out the flavor and hide some of the abrasive attack?\r

Youll find a few key things contribute to your hangover. First, of course, ethanol is the primary for--if you dont drink alcohol you wont be bombarding your body with a harsh liquid that taxes your liver and dehydrates your body.\r

Secondly, the congeners within your spirit can imp how you re the next day, from a mild sick feeling to the harsh am I dying feeling.\r

But, not all congeners are going to be stripped from your spirit because, if they are, youve pretty much got a pure ethanol vodka and thats not always desired (especially in bourbon).\r

If you want to avoid intense congeners you may want to stick with tequila, rum, vodka and gin since its not a dark liquor.\r

Need an edge? Those with less fat get drunk slower because their bodys lean muscle can absorb alcohol where fat repels it. So, youre going to have more alcohol in your blood stream if you cant absorb it.\r

What about beer before liquor, never quicker or Liquor before beer, youre in the clear? Yeah, thats just a way to try to rationalize your drinking habits when moderation is the only answer. Turns out, carbonation causes increased speed in alcohol absorption so beer, tonic, soda and other carbonated beverages can increase your drunk state quicker--ouch!\r

Bottom line, dont drink like a college kid. Drink higher quality spirits with less added sugars and do it in moderation with plenty of hydration between and youll go a long way to waking up without that ugly hangover.\r
