Bill O’Reilly is claiming that the controversy surrounding President Trump’s alleged comments to a Gold Star family may be the result of a “setup.”
On Wednesday, the conservative commentator tweeted Trump’s message, “Democrat Congresswoman totally fabricated what I said to the wife of a soldier who died in action (and I have proof). Sad!”
The president was referring to a comment Representative Frederica Wilson of Florida made about his call to a widow whose husband, 25-year-old Sgt. La David Johnson, was among four U.S. soldiers killed in Niger earlier this month.
Wilson, who could reportedly hear Trump on speakerphone, has recounted to the media that the president said, in part, "[Johnson] knew what he signed up for."
“Everyone knows when you go to war, you could possibly not come back alive, but you don’t remind a grieving widow of that. That’s so insensitive," she noted.
After O’Reilly reposted Trump’s denial, the former Fox News anchor wrote, “No proof needed for the media which immediately reported the Congresswoman's allegations as truth.”
“I don't know what was said, and neither does any other member of the press," he added. "But this whole thing has the look of a setup, does it not?”
When Trump was asked about the controversy by the press Wednesday, he continued to refute the allegations, saying, in part, “Didn’t say what that Congresswoman said, didn’t say it at all. She knows it….I’d like her to make the statement again...I had a very nice conversation with the woman, the wife, who sounded like a lovely woman.”
