President Trump slammed Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer over recent comments made about the United States’ nuclear deal with Iran.
“Dem Senator Schumer hated the Iran deal made by President Obama, but now that I am involved, he is OK with it. Tell that to Israel, Chuck!,” the president wrote in a Monday tweet.
The day prior, the senator said, “I had a great deal of misgivings about the Iran deal and voted against it, but now we ought to give it time to work, and the worst things Iran is doing right now are not within the nuclear field, but outside it.”
“I think the proper compromise is to increase sanctions on Iran for those non-nuclear areas that don’t violate the (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action), such as ICBMs; such as funding, building and supplying rockets to Hezbollah and Lebanon and other places, and fomenting terrorism in Yemen," Schumer further noted.
President Trump on Friday announced that he would not yet abandon the nuclear weapon containment deal the U.S. and a number of other nations struck with Iran in 2015.
Instead, he said he will not certify Iran’s compliance with the agreement.
The New York Times notes that in withholding certification, Trump, “essentially kicked to Congress a decision about whether to reimpose sanctions on Iran and blow up the agreement.”
