The World’s Largest Nuclear Icebreaker Ship Unveiled
  • 7 years ago
Russia now has the world's largest nuclear icebreaker.

Powered by two nuclear reactors, "Sibir" comes in at more than 550 feet long. The icebreaker, which can cut through 10 feet of ice, will haul cargo along the Northern Sea Route to Asia.

Russia is the only country in the world that produces nuclear icebreakers. Its military and economic push into the Arctic is the biggest since the Soviet Era.

Even if Russia were in a race for control of unclaimed arctic territories, it could be decades before the U.N. declares any "winners."
