UK SUPERSTORM LATEST: Strengthening Hurricane Lee to CONVERGE with Maria and HIT by Sunday
BRITAIN is facing the worst storm for more than six months as strengthening Hurricane Lee is set to converge with Hurricane Maria in a tropical weather phenomenon rarely seen. Both cyclones, currently churning the Atlantic, are on course to join forces and crash into the UK at the start of next week.Torrential downpours and severe gales threaten to sweep swathes of Britain from Sunday night and through Monday.In the past 24 hours Lee has been upgraded by the US National Hurricane Centre from a category-1 to a category-2 storm.It is whipping up 100mph winds off the coast of North America hot on the heels of Maria which is about to clip North Carolina.Maria is still a category-1 storm and will be the first to make a northeastwards turn towards the UK tomorrow afternoon. Weather models show both joining up later this week to form one deep low pressure system in the North Atlantic.This will be picked up by the jet stream and hurled eastwards towards the British Isles this weekend.Forecasters are warning to expect widespread gales and heavy rain on Sunday night and through the start of next week.The storm is likely to be the strongest and most wide-reaching since Doris hit the UK at the start of this year.Depending on its impact it would retain the name ‘Ex-Maria’ rather than ‘Brian’ – the next in the UK storm sequence – due to its tropical origin. The GFS again showing remnants of #Maria and #Lee combining with an extra-tropical low and heading towards the British Isles by Sunday: pic.twitter.com/girH2lVTMW— wxcharts (@wxcharts) September 26, 2017 The Met Office is predicting a bout of unsettled weather this weekend with winds picking up on Sunday afternoon.Chief forecaster Frank Saunders said: “Ex-Maria is likely to impact our weather towards the end of the weekend and into the beginning of next week.“However, it is important to say that any weather impacts will be far from those experienced in the Caribbean.“Hurricanes gain their energy from the warm tropical waters and Ex-Maria’ will be modified significantly as it tracks over the cool North Atlantic ocean.“Ex-Maria will still contain tropical air brought north and it is this air which has the potential to affect our weather. “At the moment the track of Maria is uncertain and therefore the direction in which it takes as it weakens and becomes ex-Maria is also uncertain.”The erratic nature of both hurricanes will have experts avidly watching the path and strength of the resulting storm as it approaches the UK.Weather Company meteorologist Dave Reynolds said the worst-case scenario will see severe gales sweep swathes of the country from Sunday night.However one forecasting model shows the storm dipping southwards and fizzling to nothing off the Spanish coast, he added.He said: “All the weather models are showing varying solutions at the moment.“One is that Maria will engulf Lee and bring a particularly deep low to the north of the UK resulting in severe gales across northern and western parts of he country. “Another scenario would see it track right up the English Channel bringing winds across the southern coasts into Tuesday.“However another model shows the possibility of the system heading towards northern Spain on Tuesday evening, and in this case it would have no effect on the UK at all.“We will get a clearer picture as we move through the week."Ex-Maria could turn out into the worst storm since Doris smashed the UK in February when 90mph winds knocked out power supplies and threw transport networks into chaos.Storm Aileen was the first to be named this season but ended up being less severe than anticipated when it struck earlier this month.Mr Reynolds added: “If we do see an impact from Ex-Maria, it is likely to be more severe than Aileen at the start of the month.”. 00FastNews.
