King Salman has agreed to let women drive in Saudi Arabia.

King Salman has agreed to let women drive in Saudi Arabia.
The Saudi Press agency confirmed the change in a statement Tuesday, saying, “The royal decree will implement the provisions of traffic regulations, including the issuance of driving licences for men and women alike.”
The official order also includes the immediate formation of a committee from multiple ministries which will determine how the new law will be implemented and enforced.
“The change, which will take effect in June of next year, was announced on state television and in a simultaneous media event in Washington,” according to the New York Times.
The news outlet also says the kingdom “hopes for a public relations benefit from the reform.”
Saudi Arabia has faced growing criticism in recent years amid protests to change the law.
The BBC notes that the Muslim-majority country had been the world’s lone hold-out in allowing women to drive, even punishing some who had dared to do so.
