Barack Obama spoke at a Beau Biden Foundation for the Protection of Children charity event on Monday and talked about what it was like seeing his own child leave the nest, reports WDEL.
“For those of us who have daughters, it just happens fast," he said. "I dropped off Malia at college, and I was saying to Joe and Jill (Biden) that it was a little bit like open-heart surgery."
“I was proud that I did not cry in front of her," Obama further commented. "But on the way back, the Secret Service was off, looking straight ahead, pretending they weren't hearing me as I sniffled and blew my nose. It was rough."
During his speech, the former president also paid tribute to the foundation’s namesake and its notable work.
Beau Biden, son of former Vice President Joe Biden, succumbed to brain cancer in 2015.
"The Beau Biden Foundation was created in 2015 by Beau Biden's widow, Hallie, and the Delaware Community Foundation to continue work that Biden pursued while Delaware's attorney general," notes Delaware Online.
