Don’t accept ANY new regulations from EU in transitional period - demands Boris Johnson
BORIS Johnson has risked another cabinet meltdown by demanding Britain does not accept any new regulations from Brussels during the proposed two-year Brexit transitional period. Mr Johnson praised Mrs May’s speech as “positive, optimistic and dynamic”, but the pair had already clashed last week after the Foreign Secretary was accused of undermining the PM by setting out his own vision of Brexit in a 4,000-word article.Home Secretary Amber Rudd slammed Mr Johnson for his “back seat driving” over Brexit with the article.The Cabinet had struck an uneasy agreement last week before the Prime Minister’s speech in Italy.In a bid to kickstart the stalled ‘divorce talks’ she made a series of concessions to the European Union. As well as having a two-year transition period, Mrs May agreed that market access and free movement would continue in this time.She also agreed with the UK would pay enough into the EU to ensure no member state would have to stump up more, or receive less, during the current budget. The sum is said to be around £18 billion.The PM also offered to write legal protections for EU citizens living in the UK into the exit treaty.
She said: “I want to incorporate the agreement fully into UK law and make sure British courts can refer directly to it.”She also wants a “bold new strategic agreement” on defence, and said the UK was “unconditionally committed” to European security.Notably she gave no indication on the future of the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
