Former Vice President Joe Biden has criticized President Trump over his controversial track record on race-related issues.
According to Politico, the Democrat was speaking at an event marking the centennial anniversary of the Charleston, South Carolina, chapter of the NAACP Saturday when he said, “We saw the truth of this president when he pardoned Joe Arpaio of Arizona.”
The former sheriff is largely known for his controversial means of finding illegal immigrants, which reportedly involved racial profiling and detaining suspects even when evidence was lacking, notes the New York Times.
As the Arizona Republic’s editorial board wrote in an op-ed last month, “Donald Trump’s pardon elevates Arpaio once again to the pantheon of those who see institutional racism as something that made America great.”
Biden on Saturday also referred to the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, telling the NAACP audience, “It’s moments like these that each of us has to stand up and declare with conviction and moral clarity that the Klan, white supremacists, neo-Nazis will never be allowed to march in the main street of American life. That we will not watch this behavior and go numb when it happens.”
His comments about the incident echo those he made in The Atlantic op-ed last month.
“We have an American president who has publicly proclaimed a moral equivalency between neo-Nazis and Klansmen and those who would oppose their venom and hate," Biden wrote while alluding to Trump's remarks about blaming "both" sides. "We have an American president who has emboldened white supremacists with messages of comfort and support.”
Trump has since signed a joint resolution passed by Congress which condemns various hate groups.
Nevertheless, Biden ultimately reminded the South Carolina crowd, “If you think your state and nation needed you in the past, we need you now more than ever.”
