Theresa May gets Minister's backing to lead Tories into election
THERESA MAY can “absolutely” lead the Conservatives into the next election a Cabinet Minister has said, risking triggering more internal warfare within the party. Earlier this week Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson was forced to deny that he would quit the Cabinet after he set out a series of Brexit demands widely interpreted as the first stage in a leadership pitch.No 10 is also keen to ensure that next week’s Conservative Party Conference in Manchester is not seen as a catwalk for potential leadership contenders.Asked if the Prime Minister could lead the party into the next election, Baroness Evans of Bowes Park, said: “Absolutely, I think she is doing a great job.“It is obviously a difficult time and the election result was not what we wanted.” But she praised the speech the Prime Minister made on the steps of Downing Street when she entered No 10, pledging to turn the UK into a country that works for all its citizens.As well as the Brexit process she said that Mrs May had been “very clear that she has a strong domestic agenda”.She said that the Government needed to continue the “fantastic work” it had done on schools.“And we need to keep trumpeting it as well, rather than everything just being Brexit, Brexit,” she added. She also defended the role of the House of Lords in the Brexit process.Peers would work to improve legislation sent to them from the Commons and not simply try to “wreck” the process, she predicted.The Lords would also recognise the primacy of the House of Commons if the two clashed over the UK’s exit from the EU, she added.Baroness Evans said: “People take their role very seriously here and if that is where the debate takes us that is where it takes us.” But she added that “despite dire warnings” they would reject it, peers had voted earlier this year to begin the process of leaving the EU.At the time there was, she says, “very intense debate” and “ping pong” back and forth with the Commons.“But the Lords did what they do which is scrutinise, revise, ask the Commons to think again and when the Commons says no, respect the primacy of the House of Commons”.She said that when it came to the Brexit Bill currently going through the Commons she was “expecting some long and intense debates”.“But the overwhelming majority of the House of Lords respect and understand our constitutional position. And also want to make sure that we deliver a Brexit that works for the UK and is in our best interests.“And the (EU) Withdrawal Bill is about making sure that we have that certainty of law and statute when we leave.”“Don’t get me wrong I don’t have rose tinted glasses,” she added. “But I am confident that we will deliver a better Bill at the end of the day (and) that we will respect the primacy of the Commons and fulfil our role.”. 00FastNews.
