SAYS WHO: Barnier wheels out chart showing UK dropping out of top 10 wealthiest countries
MICHEL Barnier is reportedly making his case for more European integration with a unique visual aid - a chart showing the UK losing its status as one of the world’s wealthiest counties. The UK is currently the world’s fifth biggest economy, behind only the United States, China, Japan and Germany. France, India, Italy, Brazil and Canada make up the rest of the top 10. But recent figures have shown the British economy performing better than Mr Bariner’s gloomy outlook suggests. Culture Secretary Karen Bradley today pledged to “remove the barriers to growth” in the UK’s creative economy following the publication of a report suggesting the sector could help create one million new jobs by 2030.
The Government-commissioned independent report found that creative industries contribute nearly £90 billion a year to the economy - roughly the same as the construction or information sectors.The report said the sector, which includes jobs in TV, film and game development, could be worth £128.4billion by 2025.And a recent study by the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR) concluded growth would pick up from a five year low of 1.7 per cent in 2017, 1.9 per cent in 2018 and two per cent in 2019 – coinciding with the UK leaving the EU. NIESR director Jagjit Chadha said last month: “According to our forecast, 2017 will mark the trough for growth.“Thereafter, we envisage a modest recovery that takes growth to a level that is close to potential.“GDP growth scenarios related to exit from the EU that were at the lower end of the distribution have so far proved to be too pessimistic.”. 00FastNews.
