BREXIT DELAYED till 2021: May to offer TWO YEAR transitional EU deal in Florence speech
THERESA May is expected to offer the EU a transitional deal which would delay Brexit by two years, in a key speech today in Florence. Cabinet ministers have discussed the possibility of forming a transition deal with the European Union of up to two years, according to reports.Prime Minister Theresa May is also believed to be ready to make an “open and generous” cash offer as part of a Brexit deal, which she will announce in a key speech on Brexit later today in the Italian city.In a cabinet meeting today that lasted two and a half hours, Mrs May is believed to have briefed her top team on the plans, according to the BBC.Ministers were given copies of the draft speech to read for 30 minutes before the meeting got under way. And ministers put on a show of unity with Work and Pensions Secretary David Gauke told Sky News: “The PM has the backing of all of us.”Meanwhile Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Chancellor Philip Hammond, who take very differing views on the Brexit issue, emerged from Number 10 together. It is understood the Prime Minister is likely to rule out a "Canada style" trade deal as a model for the UK and EU.BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg said: "Hearing speech will say there will be transition of up to 2 years ... won't be off-shelf model.” Nor is the Prime Minister expected to advocate an "EEA minus" style of arrangement, which would not end free movement and retain many EU laws, as some staunch Brexiteers have feared. Mrs May’s offer of a Brexit bill payment is being seen as a way of restarting the Brexit talks after they appeared to stall during the last round over what the EU sees as outstanding payments which have to be agreed before trade talks can start. However the UK’s “generous” offer, which is believed to be in the region of £17.6 billion (€20bn) will no doubt be seen as falling well short of some estimates that have put the fee as high as £88.3bn (€100bn).Claims Brexit civil servant Olly Robbins, who reports direct to the PM, told Germany Mrs May will offer to pay the EU £20bn in the period up to 2020 have been dismissed by Downing Street. The fourth round of Brexit negotiations begins on 25 September, with the UK due to leave the EU in March 2019. Liberal Democrat leader Vince Cable has claimed that the UK’s Brexit bill will rise far higher than the UK’s offer.Mr Cable said: "Be warned, the £20bn that Theresa May is reportedly about to offer as the biggest divorce settlement in history would simply be the down payment. Brexit will cost a lot, lot more than this."This government is being utterly reckless with the public finances by preparing to spend an absolute fortune simply to get out of Europe."This £20bn does not cover liabilities such as pensions and infrastructure projects already agreed to. "Nor does it cover the cost of access to the single market. And nor does it cover the cost to the Exchequer in reduced tax receipts due to the slowdown in the economy."Conservative voices are attacking the likes of Philip Hammond for supposedly talking up the problems of Brexit."Well, there is a very simple solution - ministers could publish the fifty-plus impact studies into the cost of Brexit on different sectors of the economy."Then the public would be better placed to judge the real cost of Brexit, and they could decide for themselves in a referendum on the final deal.". 00FastNews.
