Scottish Labour MSP’s family firm doesn’t pay minimum wage to staff as it's 'voluntary'
SCOTTISH Labour leadership hopeful Anas Sarwar risked a fresh backlash over his family firm as he said it does not pay the “real living wage” because its “voluntary”. Opponents have also attacked his decision to send his children to the same fee-paying school in Glasgow that he attended, Hutcheson Grammar.Labour alongside other campaigners backs the “real living wage” of £8.45 an hour while UK leader Jeremy Corbyn has pledged to introduce a £10 an hour minimum wage if he ever wins power.Mr Sarwar’s minority shareholding in United Wholesale is said to be worth £4.8 million. In a gruelling radio interview ahead of the first leadership hustings, the 34-year-old said he was not a director in the company and had “no say” in how it operates. It came as he was pressed on whether his wealth and school choice made him “one of the few” in contrast to Mr Corbyn’s rhetoric of standing up for “the many, not the few”.Mr Sarwar told BBC’s Good Morning Scotland programme: “No I don’t accept that at all. The reason why I am in the Labour Party is because Scotland has cradled my family, it has nurtured my family, it has given it success.“The reason why I am in the Labour Party is because I don’t choose to opt out of politics, I choose to fight for equality and fight for opportunity.”Asked why United Wholesale did not currently pay the “real living wage”, Mr Sarwar replied: “The difference is that I don’t support a voluntary real living wage.“I support a mandatory real living wage. I don’t think it is right that the market dictates what a fair day’s pay is. That is why I want it to be a compulsory policy.” Mr Sarwar insisted he had “no role in the company” but “had assurances” that it wanted a “transition to a real living wage for all employees”.The politician went onto criticise presenter Garry Robertson for appearing to focus on personality as he was grilled about his children’s schooling. He said: “It’s clear you only want to focus on policy with one candidate, not the other, which I think is unfortunate.“But directly answering the question on that, that’s a decision that my wife and I took.“That’s a decision we made as a couple. I’m sure people would respect decisions that are made by any couple in the privacy of their own home.

“What I would say is, the fact is too many of our schools aren’t good enough in Scotland. Too many of our teachers aren’t getting the resources they need.”The tense exchanges came hours before he went head-to-head against former trade unionist Mr Leonard at the Royal Concert hall in Glasgow. The 55-year-old Central Scotland MSP, a keen supporter of Mr Corbyn, won the backing of train drivers’ union Aslef. The Transport and Salaried Staffs’ Association rail union is already supporting his leadership bid.. 00FastNews.
