Boris Johnson says he will NOT resign and that the UK SHOULD pay the EU post-Brexit
BORIS Johnson insists that he is not going to resign from Cabinet over Brexit and that the UK should pay into the EU during a transitional period. The “snore-athon” refers to a 4,000-word article written by the Foreign Secretary that outlines his vision for Brexit.Mr Johnson was hit with heavy criticism over the piece, with people accusing him of trying to make a bid for Tory leadership.Although he did not talk about the so-called Brexit “divorce bill” in the piece, in the interview he said that the UK should make contributions to the EU for access to the single market during a transition period after Brexit. He added: “I don’t think the sums should be too high, but it is obviously legitimate and right that we should pay our dues – we are a law-abiding country – during the period of membership. Where our lawyers say we are on the hook for stuff, then we are going to have to pay.“But what I do not envisage is that we should pay into the EU just for access to the single market, or some such concept. It does not seem to be necessary. We do not get money for access to our markets.”A Cabinet compromise has been brokered between Boris Johnson's position and the Europhile Chancellor Philip Hammond with Mrs May’s speech, which she will present to the EU on Friday, being adapted to accommodate points raised in the Foreign Secretary's article. She has also confirmed that Friday’s speech will make clear that after the transition period ends then there will be no more payments.Mr Hammond is understood to have an influence on the speech too as he favours a lengthy “status quo” transition to make it easier for business to adjust. The UK will also reportedly offer to pay £10billion a year during the transition period as a gesture of goodwill and with the intention that the final amount would be negotiated alongside a trade deal. But, it is not certain if EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier will be satisfied by the UK’s offer, as Brussel believe Britain should fork over at least £60billion.Boris Johnson eu brexit theresa may divorce bill resign. 00FastNews.
