Ryanair KNEW about pilot shortage a YEAR ago and could have AVOIDED flight cancellations
RYANAIR knew last year about the looming pilot shortage which has seen thousands of flights cancelled, but did nothing to stop up to 400,000 passengers miss their flights, it has emerged.
Ryanair blamed a number of factors for the sudden cancellations including a backlog of staff leave, which must be taken by the end of the year. The airline also said air traffic control strikes and weather disruption were affecting its performance.But sources say the budget airliner has found it difficult to retain staff, which has caused problems. Rival Norwegian Air has recruited more than 140 pilots from Ryanair this year, adding to the squeeze on staffing. A former Ryanair employee claimed 10 per cent of Ryanair’s captains and 16 per cent of first officers left every year. They said: “When Ryanair says it’s about punctuality, that’s a red herring. “Ryanair is massively short staffed over summer so pilots used up their flying time and now need to take the leave. They legally can’t do more hours.” Yesterday Mr O’Leary said he took responsibility for the “mess up”.
He said: “This is clearly a mess up. I take responsibility. “Have I damaged Ryanair’s reputation with these cancellations? Yes.“But I’d rather damage the reputation by cancelling 50 flights a day than significantly delaying 40 per cent of our flights which would amount to 800 flights a day.” He refused to step down, adding: “I need to stay here and fix this.” . 00FastNews.
