JOEY PASTRANA - COTIQUE ALL STARS

Joey Pastrana began his musical career alongside Bobby Valentin's band , with whom he recorded the album Young Man with a Horn, but left to form his own group, with which he recorded ten albums between 1970 and 1978, six of them for George Goldner's Cotique label.

In the middle of the sixties boogaloo was way out there, a fusion of Cuban music with the soulful R&B oif that time. The most important exponents of this rhythm were Pete Rodriguez , Johnny Colón, Joe Bataan, Joe Cuba, and of course, Joey Pastrana.

This latin jazz jam is from his first lp, entitled "Joey". It's unlike anything else from that period and harkens back to the 1950's Art Blakey African based releases on Blue Note Records.
