A spiritual adviser and long-time friend to President Trump has expressed regret over implying that he had been elevated by God to win the election.
According to the Washington Post, Paula White of the large, Florida-based New Destiny Christian Center was recently asked about her remarks during the Religion News Association’s annual convention, and she said, “thanks for bringing up the elephant.”
“I’m a preacher, and I got a little fired up. And I said some things invariably I wish I would not have said. Some things that could most definitely and have been taken out of context,” she continued.
“Do I believe God raises up authority? Do I believe he sets one up and puts one down?" White added. "I don’t believe that just for Trump, I believe that had Hillary been in [the White House]. I believe that for Obama…I understand I don’t understand all things. And what those purposes are. He’s a sovereign God.”
The clarification comes after she appeared on televangelist Jim Bakker’s show last month and spoke highly about Trump.
“He’s been raised up by God because God says that he raises up and places all people in places of authority," she said. "It is God that raises up a king, it is God that sets one down, and so when you fight against the plan of God, you’re fighting against the hand of God.”
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that her words “seemed to indicate those who oppose Mr. Trump are opposing God's will.”
According to White, her friendship with the president began more than 16 years ago when Trump called her one day after seeing her preach on TV.
