The Army Is Still Figuring Out Its Autonomous Robot Future

What's a robot’s role in the military? The U.S. Army might be able to show you the answer.

A demonstration held at Fort Benning in west Georgia last month showcased how unmanned vehicles can work closely with soldiers and save lives. In the demonstration, the drone was tethered to a semi-autonomous vehicle, which could be deployed to conduct aerial surveillance. Unmanned Humvees could lead a caravan, detecting enemy positions ahead of soldiers or setting a smoke screen.

While the demonstration was a major show of force, the Army admits that its fighting force will face big changes in the next 10 to 15 years. They'll have to be able to adapt if they want to keep up with changing technologies.
