Chile's Atacama desert erupts in a blanket of wildflowers

Beautiful footage has emerged from Chile of the Atacama desert in bloom after heavy rainstorms showered the region.

The video, captured on August 26 from a plane, shows thousands of purple flowers covering the desert floor.

According to reports, this phenomenon called 'desierto florido' (flowering desert) consists of the blossoming of a wide variety of flowers between the months of September and November.

It usually happens only every four or five years.
