Ohio Governor John Kasich, a Republican, and John Hickenlooper, the Democratic governor of Colorado, are said to be “gaining momentum toward a possible joint independent bid for president in 2020,” according to Axios.
The two have been making a number of appearances together and are working with one another on key issues in their states, including healthcare and how to fill the employment gap left by automation.
Axios reports that if they run, they would likely do so with "Kasich at the top of the ticket."
That could be very bad news for Democrats.
Jim Geraghty of the National Review notes, “If you’re a vehement Trump foe, you want the anti-Trump vote split in as few ways as possible.”
He further comments, “How confident should Democrats or the Kasich-Hickenlooper team be that they wouldn’t lose a bunch of 37-34-33 splits in key states? President Trump has had a really lousy run for a while, and his approval rating remains in the mid-to-upper 30s or low 40s. Assuming that’s his floor of support, that doesn’t look so bad in a three-way race.”
Though it is very early to be making candidate predictions, Politico reports that Democrats have already begun conducting opposition research on likely GOP contenders in the 2020 race.
According to the news outlet, subjects of that effort include, “Vice President Mike Pence, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley and Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse.”
