President Trump took to Twitter Thursday morning and characterized his recent speech at a rally in Phoenix as "enthusiastic, dynamic and fun."
"The Fake News is now complaining about my different types of back to back speeches," Trump tweeted, "Well, their was Afghanistan (somber), the big Rally (enthusiastic, dynamic and fun) and the American Legion - V.A. (respectful and strong). To bad the Dems have no one who can change tones!"
The president's critics expressed a vastly different view of his address in Phoenix on Tuesday.
NPR described it as, "an incendiary rally at which he [Trump] ripped at cultural divides, played to white grievance, defended himself by stretching the truth or leaving out key facts, attacked members of his own party and the media, played the victim and threatened apocalyptic political consequences — all the while doing so by ignoring political norms and sensitivities."
MSNBC's Joe Scarborough said, “It was a frightening speech. He sounded like an autocrat trying to dehumanize his allies.”
In a Wednesday morning appearance on CNN, former national intelligence director James Clapper said the president’s address was “downright scary and disturbing."
“I really question his...fitness to be in this office," Clapper told host Don Lemon. "I also am beginning to wonder about his motivation for it — maybe he is looking for a way out.”
