A former spokesperson for the Trump campaign is facing backlash for saying slavery is “good history.”
Katrina Pierson made the comment on 'Fox and Friends' Monday while debating Johns Hopkins University professor Wendy Osefo over the merits of removing Confederate statues from the Capitol, as has been proposed by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.
After Osefo explained some of the dark history behind Confederate monuments--including ties to the Ku Klux Klan’s opposition to black political leaders, she said, “While it is a piece of American history, it’s not necessarily the good part of American history. So it doesn’t deserve a place on state grounds. It deserves a place in museums. And that’s where they need to be.”
Pierson countered, “It absolutely deserves a place because bad history is still good history for this country...”
Osefo interrupted her by asking in disbelief, “Slavery is good history?”
Pierson responded, “Absolutely…Where would we be today if not for that civil war...How would our children even know how special and how wonderful this country is so that we could even be having this discussion today.”
In addition to the professor’s strong, on-air reactions, the former Trump campaign representative has been heavily criticized on social media.
One Democratic operative tweeted, “MEGA FACEPALM: Trumpling Katrina Pierson Calls Slavery Good in Awful Attempt to Defend Trump #TrumpResign.”
Meanwhile, political commentator Roland Martin posted an even harsher message, writing, “Of course the clueless nut @KatrinaPierson would say 'slavery is good history.'"
